그 중 전 세계적으로 대유행하는 경우를 팬데믹이라고 칭한다.

Is the Coronavirus an Epidemic or a Pandemic? It Depends on Who’s Talking

In 2020, the W.H.O. defined a pandemic as "the worldwide spread of a new disease" that affects large numbers of people.

2010년 세계 보건기구(WHO, World Health Organization)는 팬데믹을 전 세계적으로 퍼져 많은 사람들에게 영향을 미치는 새로운 질병으로 규정했다.

참고로 팬데믹(Pandemic)은 모두를 뜻하는 그리스어 'Pan'과 사람을 뜻하는 'demic'이 합쳐져 만들어졌다.

 

“Typically, an outbreak becomes an epidemic when it becomes quite widespread in a particular country, sometimes in a particular region, like Zika,” said Lawrence O. Gostin, a professor of global health law at Georgetown University, said. “Whereas a pandemic is thought to be a wide geographic spread of a disease on many parts of the world, many continents.”

 

전염병은 지카 바이러스와 같이 특정 국가나 지역에 유행한다.

반면 팬데믹은 많은 대륙과 다수의 국가에 유행하여 지리학적으로 광범위하게 퍼져나가는 질병을 칭한다.
